This Month's news and features

Richardsons Stop Hiring to Solo and One Parent Families.
There has been much consternation on Facebook as Richardsons of Stalham announced that their policy on hiring boats to parties consisting of either a sole occupant or where only one adult is accompanied by children under 18, is no longer allowed due to a change of company policy. Those people who already have forward bookings have been contacted and advised their bookings have been cancelled.

If this change of policy is going to affect your plans to get afloat this summer, there are other boatyards which are still welcoming solo and one parent family bookings. Barnes Brinkcraft in Wroxham, Bridgecraft in Acle, Silverline in Brundall and Sandersons in Reedham have all confirmed they will continue to hire to these party types. Other yards are still to confirm their policy.

Live Music and Other Events on the Broads
For those people who like to take in some live music or a quiz whilst away on holiday, our events page is now back on-line here and has been updated to show what's on through the Easter holidays and the month of April. It is updated monthly so keep an eye on it if your are holidaying later in the year.

Norfolk Broads City, town and Village low-down - South Walsham

Dyke leading to South Walsham Broad

South Walsham Broad is an expanse of navigable waterway to be found off the River Bure. It is connected to the main river by Fleet Dyke, a channel which winds for around three quarters of a mile before opening out onto the Broad. You will find ample free moorings are available in two locations on the left hand bank as you approach the Broad. Be sure to cruise on into the Broad either before or after mooring as it is very picturesque. The village of South Walsham is a 30 to 45 minute walk away from the moorings. You will need to walk down Fleet Lane, then Broad Lane before coming our onto School Road, past the Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden site. At the junction with The Street, turn right and continue on until you come across The Ship Inn.

Local Attractions:
Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden is a must visit if you like woodland walks and water meadows and wildlife spotting. Measuring 130 acres with over 4 miles of woodland pathways this is the place to see a wildlife garden at it's best including a nationally renowned collection of candelabra primulas at their best at Springtime, butterflies, dragonflies, wildfowl etc.. The gardens have their own private Broad which is accessible by an Edwardian style river cruiser which operates 20 and 50 minute trips on Sundays or daily through the school holidays. More information can be found HERE.

A fine 8 mile circular walk which borders the River Bure and Fleet Dyke has been put together by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust. The route will take around 4 hours to complete and includes walks through the villages of Upton and South Walsham. More information can be found HERE.

Eating and Drinking:

The Ship Inn offers a wide choice menu promising home cooked food and light snacks.
The Fairhaven Woodland and Water Gardens has a cafe on-site to which non-garden visitors are welcome, serving snacks, light lunches, sandwiches and home made cakes.
The Kings Arms Canton is a Chinese restaurant and takeaway in the village. They will deliver to boats. Tel: 01603 270039.

Other Services:

There is a Post Office Stores beyond the Ship Inn in the village.
