March 2021 Newsletter

The prospect of self catering holidays in England being allowed from the 12th April, and the fact that being able to holiday abroad this summer is reliant on so many factors beyond the UK's control, has led to a wave of bookings for holiday afloat. There's still good availability if you can avoid the children's school holidays, but it's very tight for Spring Bank, late July and most of August.

If you're still to book, and you need to get away whilst the kids are off school, there's still a choice of boats from the weekend of the 21st August. Below, are some examples of 4 and 7 night holidays still available to book, at the time of writing.

Norfolk Broads Towns and Villages - South Walsham

South Walsham Broad is an expanse of navigable waterway to be found off the River Bure. It is connected to the main river by Fleet Dyke, a channel which winds for around three quarters of a mile before opening out onto the Broad. You will find ample free moorings are available in two locations on the left hand bank as you approach the Broad. Be sure to cruise on into the Broad either before or after mooring as it is very picturesque. The village of South Walsham is a 30 to 45 minute walk away from the moorings. You will need to walk down Fleet Lane, then Broad Lane before coming our onto School Road, past the Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden site. At the junction with The Street, turn right and continue on until you come across The Ship Inn.

Local Attractions: Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden is a must visit if you like woodland walks and water meadows and wildlife spotting. Measuring 130 acres with over 4 miles of woodland pathways this is the place to see a wildlife garden at its best including a nationally renowned collection of candelabra primulas at their best at Springtime, butterflies, dragonflies, wildfowl etc. The gardens have their own private Broad which is accessible by an Edwardian style river cruiser which operates 20 and 50 minute trips on Sundays or daily through the school holidays. More information can be found HERE. A fine 8 mile circular walk which borders the River Bure and Fleet Dyke has been put together by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust. The route will take around 4 hours to complete and includes walks through the villages of Upton and South Walsham. More information can be found HERE.

Eating and Drinking: The Ship Inn offers a wide choice menu promising home cooked food and light snacks. The Fairhaven Woodland and Water Gardens has a cafe on-site to which non-garden visitors are welcome, serving snacks, light lunches, sandwiches and home made cakes. The Kings Arms Canton is a Chinese restaurant and takeaway in the village. They will deliver to boats. Tel: 01603 270039.

Other Services: There is a Post Office Stores beyond the Ship Inn in the village.
