Norfolk Broads Towns and Villages - Horsey Map

River Thurne River Thurne
Horsey Mere is actually a Broad. It is reached by passing under Potter Heigham Bridge. So a low draft boat, usually ones where the cabin is all the same height and driven from the front, or centre cockpit boats where the wheelhouse sides drop down would be needed and is a consideration when booking your holiday. Alternatively, you could moor at Potter Heigham, and hire a day boat from one of the local boatyards, to explore the 5 miles or so of extended waterways beyond the bridge. At the far end is a narrow dyke which provides moorings for a small fee for the area.

Local Attractions:You are in unspoiled Broads territory here so the countryside and wildlife figure highly. Horsey Mill is open for viewing and provides good views from its "viewing platform". The walk to the beach at Horsey Gap can be particularly rewarding as often seals can be seen basking on the shore. The walk is around one mile long.
Ross’s Wildlife Boat trip is a cruise that starts from the Horsey moorings. You might wonder why you would want to step on a boat when you have one yourself. However, the tour is well regarded as it will take you to hidden areas of the Broad where you will discover wildlife in its own unspoiled habitat. The cruise is one hour long and conducted by knowledgeable staff, who are passionate about the area. Pre-booking is advisable. More details can be found HERE.

Eating and Drinking: A cafe is usually open 10 to 4pm and is located at the top end of the dyke. Though the area is remote it still has it’s own public house, The Nelson's Head. The bar offers an extensive menu and makes a good before or after stop on the way to Horsey Gap.

Other Services: At the end of the dyke is a small cafe and shop selling provisions.

TIP. You are advised to arrive early should you wish to moor here due to the popularity of the area. You will be approached on arrival to settle the mooring fee which is currently £8 for an overnight stay.
