Norfolk Broads Towns and Villages - Thorpe Green Map

River Yare River Yare
At Thorpe, a channel diverts away from the main river under 2 low rail bridges which mark the start and end of Thorpe Green. Moorings are available at the Rushcutters Arms and at the river green a little further along. Mooring is difficult as in both cases they are bounded at each end by the low bridges. This means if you intend to stop here you need to consider the states of the tide when you intend to come and go. At high water, the chances are you would not be able to travel under the bridges which effectively means you would be cut off from the main river until the water drops enough to allow passage through.

Things to do: Norwich city centre is close by. Take the number 5b or 31 to get to Norwich Railway Station ( 7 minutes) and beyond thus saving the cruise into Norwich and the £16 overnight mooring fees. Walking into town will take around half an hour.

Eating and Drinking:
The first of the three public houses you come to is the Rushcutters Arms which is just beyond the first of the railway bridges if travelling up from the direction of Brundall. The Rushcutters is an attractive building with its own riverside gardens and is one of the oldest buildings in Thorpe St. Andrew. A previous landlord, John Hart went on to establish one of the largest fleets of hire cruisers on nearby Thorpe Island. Hearts Cruisers was also one of the earliest to be established. Unfortunately, it ceased operation in 2002. The public house is a large concern with a matching choice of menus for lunch and evening meals. The next riverside establishment is The River Garden which as its name suggests also has an area by the river to spend time enjoying a drink or perhaps a snack. Food is served daily from lite bites to evening meals. Finally, you come to The Town House which also has a very fine riverside garden. The Town House is a Crown Carvery that offers meats with serve-yourself vegetables daily representing excellent value. Other non-carvery dishes are also available.

Other Services: A cafe and a hairdressers are situated opposite the river green moorings.

TIP: Do not consider staying more than 24 hours at the river green moorings. The local council are planning to fine over-stayers up to £100 to stop the moorings becoming clogged up.
