Holiday before the kids schools break up if you can

It's not rocket science. If you're a group or family without children, there are massive advantages to starting your holiday before the kids summer break.

1. Fewer Crowds During school term time, you’ll avoid the big influx of families. Quieter waterways mean easier mooring, more peaceful cruising, and less competition for picnic spots or pub tables.
2. Lower Prices Boat hire often costs significantly less before the main summer holidays. You’ll get better deals and more choice of boats or accommodation.
3. More Relaxed Atmosphere The Broads feel calmer when they aren’t full of school-holiday traffic. Villages and attractions are less busy, making everything more leisurely.
4. More Wildlife to See Early summer is fantastic for spotting birdlife (bitterns, marsh harriers, kingfishers) and wildflowers along the banks. By late July/August, some wildlife is less active or harder to spot.
5. Better Service Staff at hire yards, cafes, and pubs aren’t under peak-season pressure yet. You’re more likely to enjoy attentive, unhurried service.

Norfolk Broads Towns and Villages - Reedham

Reedham at Sunset

Reedham is a pretty riverside village found on the banks of the River Yare, around 10 miles from Great Yarmouth. Its proximity to the seaside town makes it a popular stop-off point for those who need to wait for the tide to flow out enough to enable passage through the bridges at Yarmouth. However, Reedham is not without its own navigational problems. Here the tidal current runs quite fast at times and you will need to approach the moorings against any running tide. That means that you point the boat against the flow of the tide so that you will have a more controlled approach as the river will effectively be pushing against you. If you were to approach a mooring with the flow of the tide, you would find you were unable to manage the boat and bring it to a halt in a controlled fashion. The river at Reedham is spanned by a rail swing bridge which even at high tide will not restrict passage for most hire cruisers. However care should be taken passing under as the available channel narrows and if you are travelling with the tide, again you will find it difficult to control your boat at close quarters. Having said all of the above, it should be noted that Reedham Quay has its own on-duty ranger who is there to assist you in mooring and to give advice on how best to leave.

New Mooring Fees: New for this year (2025), the Broads Authority have introduced mooring fees for daytime and overnight mooring at the quayside. You will now need to pay £6 to moor daytime up until 5pm, or  £12 for overnight until 10am the next morning.

Local Attractions: Pettitts Animal Adventure Park - around a mile from the quayside - is a family adventure park with domestic and exotic animals, kids' rides, live entertainment, and a cafe. Watching other hire craft coming and going with the fast-running tides is an entertaining pastime. The riverside walk as far as the Ferry Inn, has now been reopened and is a pleasant path through reeds and passes the occasional sheep. To get to it, take the road leaving the village, past Canells store/cafe, past the memorial monument, then look out for the signposted pathway on your left.

Eating and Drinking: The Ship Inn - restaurant and bar food and occasional entertainment. Its terrace overlooks the river and swing bridge. The Lord Nelson also has a terrace overlooking the river and offers restaurant and bar food. The Post Office Tearoom is also on the riverfront. The Reedham Ferry Inn (Restaurant and bar food) is to be found further along the river from Reedham Quay. There is a fish and chip shop up the hill on the street above the riverside.

Other Services: A small Post Office store selling provisions and other goods. A general store can be found on the upper-level street called The Hills. From the riverfront, take the Middle Hill pathway, and at the top turn right. Public toilets are available close to the Ship Inn. A Doctor's surgery is located in the village up the hill from the riverside.

TIP: If in any doubt, ask the ranger to assist you on how to leave your moorings. He will be happy to help.
