Norfolk Broads Towns and Villages - Stokesby

Stokesby moorings

Stokesby is the last village you come to on the River Bure when heading towards Great Yarmouth. It is a particularly attractive spot to moor, whilst waiting for the tidal conditions which will allow your passage under the low bridges at Yarmouth. The remaining nine miles to Yarmouth will take you around two and a quarter hours to complete so if you have overnighted at Stokesby, after a relatively short cruise, you are able to spend the rest of the day at the holiday resort. You will find free moorings for about six craft at the village staithe and more further on outside the Ferry Inn though an overnight charge of £5 is payable here. Mooring can be tricky as the tide runs fairly fast. Approach the moorings against the tide with the front of the boat pointing into the tidal stream. By that, we mean if you imagine your boat engine was in neutral, the tide would be pushing the boat backward.

Local Attractions: Stokesby is a small village on the edge of the marshes which leads to Yarmouth. A 4.5-mile round trip walk can be undertaken from the village green. A map of the route can be found HERE. Bikes can be hired from the Riverside Stores. Spend some time just watching the river traffic as it heads to and from Great Yarmouth.

Eating and Drinking: The Ferry Inn is on the quayside and has its own moorings nearby. It provides an extensive food menu. The Riverside Tea Rooms are a short walk from the moorings located next to the Riverside Stores offering breakfasts, light lunches, and afternoon cream teas. A takeaway service is also available.

Other Services: The Riverside Stores describes itself as the "Aladdin’s Cave of the Broads and offers provisions, gifts, fishing tackle, and many other items to the Broads holidaymaker.

TIP: Ensure you allow a little extra rope when tieing up as the rise and fall in the tide here is appreciable. Not allowing enough rope could result in the boat being lashed against the moorings making it very difficult to untie or even causing damage to your boat.
